TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Early Show Anchor, Harry Smith in for Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric, who is on assignment:

Good afternoon, everyone. This is Harry Smith filling in for Katie.

It’s home sweet home after five years for three American hostages rescued from Colombia. The three U.S. defense contractors were kidnapped in 2003 when their plane went down in the jungle there. But yesterday, Colombian spies tricked leftist rebels into handing them over - along with kidnapped politician Ingrid Betancourt. Hari Sreenivasan has the story of their homecoming - and Bob Orr takes an in-depth look how this dramatic rescue happened.

On the campaign trail, certain of Barack Obama’s viewpoints seem to be tiptoeing toward the middle - including his stance on Iraq troop withdrawals. But is he compromising campaign promises? Dean Reynolds has the story and Chip Reid will show us what John McCain’s campaign has to say.

Next: Wildfires continue their destruction in Northern California, forcing more than 1,000 people to evacuate the scenic coastal community. But some residents are sticking around - hoping to try to save parts of Big Sur. John Blackstone is there with the latest.

It’s prime military recruiting time - but why are the vast majority of young Americans ineligible to serve? David Martin reports on a perfect storm of trends in U.S. teenagers’ lives that is making recruiting tough … and could be making the military weaker.

Finally tonight: The cost of gas stings every day on the road - but what about on the water? Ben Tracy hits the high seas to meet boaters caught in the wake of high gas prices.

See you tonight and have a great Fourth of July!

Harry

Along with the other top stories of the day, we’ll also have these features

IS AMERICA ON SALE TO FOREIGN BUYERS? - The sinking dow, weak dollar, and sky high oil prices are all contributing to a major factor in today's us economy: foreign investors. In the past year, acquisitions of U.S. companies by foreign buyers went up 27%, and about one in five American real estate agents sold a second home to a foreign buyer. So much of America is being bought up by those overseas, it raises the question - is the country on sale? CBS News correspondent Jeff Glor will answer that question.

BOSTON POPS PREVIEW - This year marks the 35th Anniversary of the "Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular,” an event in which the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra holds an annual outdoor Fourth of July free concert for the community. Craig Ferguson from CBS's "The Late Show with Craig Ferguson" will host the special event for the second consecutive year, and superstars Rascal Flatts and John Mellencamp will be performing live! THE EARLY SHOW will preview this nationwide event, as all Americans tune in to celebrate Independence Day with Boston!

A VARIETY OF CHEAP GRILLS - To celebrate the 4th of July, many of us are headed to our backyards and balconies to cook up American favorites on our grill. If you are in the market for a grill and want to make your celebration perfect, Christine Quinlan of Food and Wine Magazine has some great tips on the latest and greatest AND cheapest grills out there.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT JULY 4TH - Besides the fireworks, flag and BBQ fun…there is a lot that Americans DON’T know about the importance of 4th of July. Author Kenneth C. Davis wrote a book series called Don't Know Much About, and many people believe he has done an incredible job in educating the public on unknown history. His new book called America's Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders who Shaped a Nation focuses on moments that were crucial in shaping America's early destiny…most of which many people don’t know about. Davis will be joining us live in the studio with some interesting facts about the history of July 4th.

HOW TO SPICE UP YOUR JULY 4TH BBQ - Now that we have shown you all kinds of grills, it's time to show you what to make on them! Elizabeth Karmel, a grill guru and executive chef at Manhattan’s Hill Country restaurant believes that when you are entertaining on July 4th, variety is the key. She’ll show us some ways to get your guests involved, with some great rib and burger recipes that you can dress up almost any way you want.

COUNTRY MUSIC STAR TRISHA YEARWOOD PERFORMS - Trisha Yearwood is an American country music singer, most well-known known for her series of major hits during the 1990’s. The three-time Grammy award-winner will be on our plaza with a live performance!
